Terms & Conditions

The short version: the tools are free, they run inside your browser, and your files never reach us — which leaves these terms very little to govern.

1. Agreement to These Terms

These terms sit alongside our Privacy Policy, which describes how the site handles data. On any question of privacy, the Privacy Policy is the document that governs.

Privacy Policy

2. What the Service Is

ScanMetadata offers free browser-based tools for viewing, comparing, editing and removing file metadata. Every tool runs entirely on your own device using client-side JavaScript; your files are never uploaded to, stored on, or processed by our servers.

The service is provided free of charge, without an account, and with no promise that it will stay available. We may change, suspend or withdraw any tool, and we may update the site, at any time and without notice.

3. Your Files Stay Yours

Because the work happens on your own device, we never receive your files, the metadata inside them, or the files the tools produce. We claim no ownership of and no licence over any of it.

You are responsible for holding the right to open, read and alter every file you use these tools on, and for what you do with the results.

4. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Use the tools on files you have no legal right to open, alter or share.
  • Use the site to break the law, or to conceal, tamper with or fabricate evidence.
  • Attempt to disrupt, overload, probe or gain unauthorised access to the site or the infrastructure that hosts it.
  • Republish or resell the site as a service of your own, or strip its notices and attributions.
  • Present anything the tools report as a certified, guaranteed or independently verified result.

5. No Warranty

The site and its tools are provided "as is" and "as available", with no warranty of any kind, express or implied — including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement.

The tools report what they can read from a file and say "Unknown" where they cannot, but we do not warrant that any reading is complete or correct, that a cleaned file retains no metadata whatsoever, or that a tool will work with every file, format or browser. Removing metadata rewrites the file and cannot be undone, so keep the original of anything you value.

6. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, ScanMetadata and the people who operate it are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of the site — including lost, corrupted or altered files, metadata that was or was not removed, or any decision taken on the basis of a result shown here. The service is free and runs on your own device: you use it at your own risk.

7. Intellectual Property

The ScanMetadata name, and the design, text and source code of this site, are protected by copyright and are not licensed for reuse; nothing in these terms grants you a right to them. The site is built on third-party open-source components, each of which remains under its own licence.

8. Third-Party Services

Two optional features reach the internet, and only after you press a button that says so: turning a photo's GPS coordinates into a street address, and drawing the map that plots them. Both send the coordinates to OpenStreetMap, whose own terms and privacy policy then apply and which we do not control. Leave the button alone and no request is made.

9. Changes to These Terms

We may revise these terms as the site changes. The date shown above is when this version was published, and continuing to use the site after a revision means you accept it.
